Restaurateur Stephen Starr has locations across the East Coast with hot spots in Manhattan, Atlantic City and, shortly, in Washington D.C. Still, Philadelphia is his home and this week STARR Events, his catering arm, unveiled its most recent acquisition, the Starr Commissary at 667 North Broad Street.

Starr and STARR Events’ president Simon Powles welcomed invited guests into the recently redesigned space – a one-time haven for Philly’s homeless – that will function as the catering hub for Starr restaurant spots in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Grounds for Sculpture, and additional locations such as the ARTS Ballroom at 1324 Locust, and other custom-designed parties. Along with all that, the Commissary, with its colorful facade, has a private tasting room that can be rented out for special occasions. On Tuesday night, the entire kitchen was a tasting room with invited guests eating edamame dumplings, veal ravioli and other morsels from still-steaming pans. The freshly baked desserts were impressive as well.
