Demi Lovato's third studio album, Unbroken |
Singer Demi Lovato is having a winning Fall season with a current #1 single and a new high-profile gig as a judge on the Fox Network’s hit TV show X Factor, plus appearances on the MTV Video Music Awards and Katie Couric’s new talk show on ABC.
This week Lovato’s label, Hollywood Records, and The Disney Group announced that the multi-platinum recording artist achieved her first number one Top 40 radio hit with “Give Your Heart a Break.” The song is the second single from her third album, Unbroken (2011); it currently has 98 million spins on radio, and is heading toward the 100 million mark. “Give Your Heart a Break” was released last December, and made its climb up the charts due to heavy promotional efforts by the label and Lovato including TV appearances, magazine features, licensing placements, and touring (her sold-out North American tour wrapped over the Labor Day weekend).
At age 20, Lovato has fifteen years’ experience as an entertainer, first in talent shows, then in television as a child on Barney and Friends, and later as a teenager in the Disney Channel’s Camp Rock films and sitcom Sonny with a Chance. This month sees Lovato returning to TV with a list of appearances. On Thursday, September 6, she is set to perform “Give Your Heart a Break” on the MTV Video Music Awards pre-show. Then on September 12 she starts her new gig as a judge on Fox’s X Factor, taking a seat alongside industry heavy-hitters Britney Spears (who famously launched her career with Disney as a Mouseketeer), Simon Cowell and LA Reid. A day later on September 13, Lovato will appear on Katie Couric’s new ABC talk show, Katie, on which she will perform and be interviewed.
All of this comes on the heels of a few rocky years for Lovato, who has been candid about her personal struggles. In 2010, Lovato left the Camp Rock 2 tour (with her Jonas Brothers co-stars) and checked into rehab for help with depression, eating disorders and cutting; during her treatment she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Lovato’s talent and focus, along with the open manner in which she dealt with her issues, has won her a large and loyal fan base known as "Lovatics". She currently has over 9 million followers on her Twitter acount, as well as extremely popular pages on Facebook and Tumblr.
