Coachella Festival 2014 lineup announced |
In this its 16th year, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival – one of America’s premier live gatherings – has scored two major reunions, one bigger than the other, for its April dates. Along with power-punk figurehead Paul Westerberg gathering his troops for the reconvening of The Replacements, Atlanta’s favorite hip hop duo, OutKast’s Andre 3000 and Big Boi, have joined together for a headlining slot during the festival in Palm Springs, California. With additional headliners including art rock gods Muse and the nu-tribal escapades of Arcade Fire, the two weekends of Coachella 2014 – April 11 through 13 and April 18 through 20 - may be one of the storied festival’s best.
There’s always some rumor that steers each and every Coachella. Big names such as Led Zeppelin and David Bowie have forever been linked to the fest without rhyme or reason. Last year though, camps for both OutKast member’s dropped rumors that the long-separated rap duo would make 2014 the year they’d reunite, with Coachella as the start. Last night, Coachella’s peeps used a "Hey Ya" related Tweet ("share it like a Polaroid picture") to announce OutKast’s participation. As for Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson’s sloppy power punk act, the Replacements, both men have stated they were looking forward to a reunion, with each participating in a 2013 charity album, Songs for Slim, with proceeds going to one-time Replacements guitarist Slim Dunlap who suffers from the effects of a 2012 stroke.
While OutKast, Muse and Arcade Fire headline the fest, odd pop lasses such as Lorde and Lana Del Rey, indie rock masters like Beck and Queens of the Stone Age, hip hop heroes such as Pharrell Williams and Nas, and dance music mavens Duck Sauce and Skrillex – amongst others – will fill the bill.
