Disney Theatrical Productions’ Newsies – a Tony Award-winner with music by the legendary Alan Menken and book by four-time Tony-winner Harvey Fierstein – is gearing up for a national tour that will play the Academy of Music in Philadelphia during the 2014-15 season. In preparation of those yet-unnamed dates, Newsies is holding open call auditions in Philly for male dancers, 16-12, Equity and Non-Equity, on Friday, March 14 for the North American touring production. Dancers should report to the Pennsylvania Convention Center (1101 Arch Street, Phila PA, 215.418.4700) by 4 PM.

Newsies has a funny history. The stage musical winner of  the 2012 Tonys for Best Score and Best Choreography began its artistic life in 1992 when Ron Howard directed his Newsies film based on the real-life Newsboys Strike of 1899 in New York City. It was not a hit. The musical premiered at the Paper Mill Playhouse in 2011, made its Broadway debut in 2012, and was an immediate smash.

Technically-trained dancers interested in being part of the Newsies sensation – the tour and the Broadway experience – must bring sneakers, tap shoes, knee pads and a photo/resume to the first come, first serve  audition at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. Be prepared to tap and sing.

Audience members interested in when Newsies is coming to town can register for advance ticket access notifications at NewsiesTheMusical.com/Tour, Facebook.com/Newsies and Twitter.com/Newsies.
