Sausage Gravy and Cornbread Waffle with Fried Egg at Chhaya Café |
When Chhaya Café moves to its new location at 1819 East Passyunk on August 21, chef and owner Varnana “V” Beuria will have a larger home for her daily breakfast, lunch and weekend brunch nook. This is necessary due to the popularity of Chhaya, previously located two doors down at 1823 on East Passyunk Avenue, also known as South Philadelphia's "Restaurant Row." The concepts that V made popular at Chhaya's former space will remain: creative twists on classic dishes combined with pancakes, waffles and crepes, plus salads, sandwiches and beverages including a satisfying selection of teas and fair trade coffees.
In its old space, Chhaya was comfortable but small. In its new, double-the-size location, Chhaya Café is set up like a bar so its baristas can interact with customers, and there's more room to work while you dine in its additional laptop areas. Chhaya will continue creating the comforting dishes they're known for like two of our favorites: the creamy and hearty sausage gravy and cornbread waffle with fried egg, and the dense and delicious French Toast waffle with fresh macerated berries and maple syrup.
Chhaya also offers specials that correspond with seasonal ingredients and holidays. Last Fall, Chhaya had a hit with a turkey and cranberry sauce waffle that tasted just like a traditional holiday dinner; this summer, Chhaya offered a cheesesteak waffle that was a favorite of tourists and townies alike.
To go with the meal, Chhaya carries a large selection of traditional and herbal teas, and organic, fair trade, bird-safe coffees with three preparation options – pour over, French press and siphon – as well as Belgian hot chocolate, juice and soda. Definitely try the South Indian Decoction, a slightly sweet coffee mixed with milk and topped with foam.
Beginning on August 21, you can stop by Chhaya's new location at 1819 East Passyunk Avenue, Philadelphia, PA. For more info visit ChhayaCafe.com or call 215.465.1000
