On season 2, episode 25 of The X Factor USA we witness one of the Top 4 contestants leave the show in a shocking elimination, and we find out which three acts will move on to the Finals and remain in the running for the five million dollar record contract. We also see performances from Bruno Mars and Bridgit Mendler.

Hosts Mario Lopez and Khloe Kardashian introduce the judges: L.A. Reid, Demi Lovato, Simon Cowell and Britney Spears. For this show though, the judges won’t have a sing-off to critique like they have in recent weeks; for the semifinal results, the question of who gets eliminated rests entirely on the public vote.

The Top 4 contestants – Carly Rose Sonenclar, Tate Stevens, Emblem3 and Fifth Harmony – sing Diddy’s “Coming Home” as a group number. Then we see a video recap of their performances on the semifinal show, and when it’s through, Khloe asks Simon if there are going to be any surprises regarding who will be going home. He responds that he thinks it will be hard for his “girls” because the other three acts are so strong, but that he does believe in miracles.

Then there is pre-taped segment with the contestants talking about what winning means to them. Tate says he has to make it through because most likely he doesn’t have a job to go home to (does anyone watching believe Tate will have to go back to being a road worker if he doesn't win?). Emblem3 “knew from the beginning of time we wanted to play music and be in a band together… we really want to have a chance at winning... we're ready.” For Fifth Harmony, "Our families have done so much for us, and for us to be able to give something back would just mean the world." Carly Rose Sonenclar says, “I grew up watching the VMAs and the Grammys and I just wanted to be there... this obviously means the world to me and I just really hope that I did enough.”

The judges and their contestants are introduced again, and then the first contestant who has made it through to the Finals is announced: it is Fifth Harmony. It takes the band by compete surprise, and Simon seems just as floored as they are – he is absolutely beaming when he gushes, “I believe in miracles, and these girls, you know, I thought they were sensational last night, I could not be happier, I still got one more I want to go through though.”

Bridgit Mendler
Then singer/actress Bridgit Mendler performs the hit single “Ready or Not” from her debut album Hello My Name Is… It has lyrics that reference Prince William and Kate, and having a palace next to Oprah. Midway through the song she picks up an accent – Jamaican, perhaps.

The second contestant going through to the Finals is announced: Tate Stevens. At this point both Carly Rose Sonenclar and her mentor, Britney Spears, have “Uh oh” looks on their faces. When the camera catches a glimpse of Emblem3 standing behind Mario as he throws to commercial, Drew has his eyes closed. After the break Khloe interviews them backstage: Carly Rose says she is "feeling really nervous", and Drew says he is "grateful to even have this experience", and for all he’s learned while on the show.

Bruno Mars
It’s going to be a long 10 minutes until the acts and their fans learn who the third finalist will be. Luckily we have Bruno Mars to keep us company while we wait. He does “Locked Out of Heaven” from his latest album Unorthodox Jukebox; it is currently the number one record in America. Mars and his band are exceptional - if you can listen to this performance and not dance around the room you are a stone.

At last the third act heading to the Finals is revealed, and it is… Carly Rose Sonenclar. Emblem3’s Drew hugs Carly Rose, and it’s muffled, but you can hear him say he’s happy for her. When Carly Rose is handed a mic she tells Emblem3 she knows she’s going to be buying their albums. It is sweet and gracious on both of their parts.

It is shocking to see Emblem3 eliminated (and hard to believe the Tween vote didn't pull through for them), but once Fifth Harmony made it through it seemed inevitable; there was no way Carly Rose or Tate were going home. Simon says he’s gutted for Emblem3, but that they are going to have a huge career off the back of this. We totally agree.

L.A. Reid
Meanwhile, judge L.A. Reid is going back to his huge career as a record exec. In the hours before the results show aired, Reid gave Access Hollywood an exclusive interview and announced that the current season of The X Factor USA will be his last. Reid stated, “I have a huge responsibility to a roster of artists and it’s kind of time for me to stop doing the ‘me’ show.” He also plans to use knowledge he gained on The X Factor to produce television shows.

The X Factor USA airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8/7c on FOX.
