Derek Hough and Kellie Pickler on Dancing with the Stars |
On Dancing with the Stars Week 7, the seven remaining couples performed Latin dances for judges Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli. Once the scores were tallied, Kellie Pickler and Alexandra Raisman were tied at the top of the leaderboard, but Pickler had the highest cumulative score for this season, so she and her pro partner Derek Hough w immunity from this week’s elimination. The remaining teams participated in a Dance-Off Challenge, and as it progressed, judges added three points to each winning couple’s scores. The evening also featured performances by Latin Grammy winning artist Juanes.

Hosts Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke-Charvet announce this week’s Dance-Off Challenge, then the competition begins.
Superbowl Champion Jacoby Jones and Karina Smirnoff do a Salsa to the song "Danza Kuduro" by Don Omar. Jacoby wears a white unbuttoned shirt and tan pants; Karina is in a white backless costume with a short chiffon skirt. Len asks, “Was that an earthquake or did you just rock this place? “ He says he would have liked a few less lifts, but finishes his critique by calling their dance “fabulous.” Bruno yells, “The fiesta has begun! I loved it!” Carrie Ann grosses everyone out with, “You could fart the salsa.”
SCORES: Carrie Ann 9, Len 9, Bruno 9 for a total of 27 out of 30
Actor Ingo Rademacher and Kym Johnson do a Rumba to the song "Maria Maria" by Santana. Ingo wears a peach-colored shirt, tan pants and a white hat; Kym is in a red two-piece costume with an embellished bra top and a peach fringed skirt. Bruno thinks the hip action was “too staccato” and says they need more work. Carrie Ann tells Ingo, “Your form was nice, but I missed the fluidity.” Len says Ingo lacked musicality in the arms and “it wasn’t great but it was good, well done!”
SCORES: Carrie Ann 7, Len 8, Bruno 7 for a total of 22 out of 30
Country Singer Kellie Pickler and Derek Hough do a Samba to the song "Shake Your Bon-Bon" by Ricky Martin. Kellie wears a ruffled bra top and a matching skirt; Derek is shirtless and wears red pants. Carrie Ann tells Kellie, “When I watch you dance all I see is perfection in every single move you do, BUT, I don’t feel you when you dance.” Len calls it “a mix of booty, bounce and bongo” and says, “It was crisp, clean, hot and spicy… I thought it was brilliant.” Bruno enthuses, “Everything you would want from a samba was there.”
SCORES: Carrie Ann 9, Len 10, Bruno 10 for a total of 29 out of 30
Comedian Andy Dick and Sharna Burgess do a Rumba to the song “Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White” by Pérez Prado. Andy wears a striped shirt and pink tie under a yellow vest with tan pants and white hat; Sharna is in a purple costume with a long fringed skirt. They look like they are dressed for two separate performances. Len enjoys the dance as entertainment, but calls it “more erratic than erotic” and says Andy needs more movement through the body and arms. Bruno says, “The steps have to flow through the body, it’s not enough to do the feet and hope for the best.” Carrie Ann reminds Andy, “You need to not forget about your arms.”
SCORES: Carrie Ann 5, Len 6, Bruno 6 for a total of 17 out of 30
Olympic Gymnast Alexandra Raisman and Mark Ballas do a Salsa to the song “Echa Pa'lla (Manos Pa'rriba)" by Pitbull. Aly rehearses with DWTS troupe member Henry Byalikov because Mark was injured in rehearsal, but he recovers in time for the broadcast. Aly wears a light turquoise costume with turquoise and lime green feathers; Mark is in turquoise pants and hat and a lime green shirt. Bruno deems it “A delicious cocktail of tropical flavors.” Carrie Ann says, “I loved it, you nailed it.” Len offers, “It was like a Tequila sunrise: sharp and fruity, tasty and refreshing.” Len says there were elements he would have changed, but, “As far as the exuberance and the way you attacked it, you couldn’t ask for more.”
SCORES: Carrie Ann 10, Len 9, Bruno 10 for a total of 29 out of 30
The Bachelor Star Sean Lowe and Peta Murgatroyd do a Rumba to the song "Hero" by Enrique Iglesias. Sean wears a light grey shirt with dark grey pants; Peta is in a grey backless costume with a gorgeous beaded front and sleeves and a long chiffon skirt. Carrie Ann is “very impressed” and says the dance “was just wonderful.” Len quips that it was “Like a match, Peta was hot and you were a bit wooden,” and adds that Sean’s flapping hands got on his nerves. Bruno tells Sean, “Your extensions were better than ever… you should be proud.”
SCORES: Carrie Ann 8, Len 8, Bruno 8 for a total of 24 out of 30
Disney Star Zendaya and Val Chmerkovskiy do a Paso Doble to the song "Buster Voodoo" by Rodrigo y Gabriela. Zendaya wears a white gown with a ruffled neckline, hip and hem, and as the dance opens she plays castinets; Val is in black shirt and pants. Len calls Val “A powerful matador” and Zendaya “the cape fluid and flowing”, then he reminds her to raise her chin. Bruno tells Zendaya, “You look like and angel you dance like a fury.” Carrie Ann admires the routine for having gorgeous lines and being “beautifully portrayed."
SCORES: Carrie Ann 9, Len 9, Bruno 9 for a total of 27 out of 30
*************
Tonight’s scores have Aly and Mark and Kellie and Derek in a tie for first place, so the rules state that the win goes to the couple with the highest cumulative score for the season: Kellie and Derek receive the prize of immunity.
Up until this point in the show we’ve only seen Juanes in snippets as the show comes back from commercial breaks, but here he does a full song while the DWTS troupe does a routine choreographed by Louis Van Amstel.
The Dance-Off Challenge begins. The top scorers choose the couple they want to dance against, and then that couple gets to pick the style of dance. The winning team for each round will get three bonus points added to their score.
Dance-Off #1: Aly and Mark go for the easy win and choose Andy and Sharna; Andy picks the Cha-cha-cha. They dance to "Brokenhearted" by Karmin. Aly and Mark wear black and orange; Andy and Sharna wear gold. Len admires Andy’s "pluck"; Bruno says they did a fantastic job; Carrie Ann loves Andy for never giving up.
Winner: All three judges choose Aly and Mark
Dance-Off #2: Zendaya and Val decide to “pick on someone our own size,” and choose Jacoby and Karina; Jacoby picks the Jive. They dance to "Good Golly Miss Molly" by Little Richard. Zendaya wears tangerine fringe (and white Chucks!) and Val is in black; Jacoby wears black and red, Karina wears gold. Bruno says it was like watching two champions; Carrie Ann applauds Zendaya and Val for choosing Jacoby; Len thinks it was “So exciting” and says, “It’s a tough call”
Winner: All three judges choose Zendaya and Val
Dance-Off #3: Sean and Peta and Ingo and Kym are the two couples left, so they dance-off with a Rumba to "Apologize" by OneRepublic. Sean is in all-black, Peta is in gold. Ingo is also in all black; Kym is in black and gold beaded fringe. Carrie Ann says, “Wow, Ingo, nice improvement”, and complimets Sean for another strong performance. Len says “This is the hardest for me because I gave you both the same scores." Bruno says it was “like watching the battle of the hunks.”
Winner: Ingo and Kym – Carrie Ann and Len choose Ingo and Kym; Bruno chooses Sean and Peta.
The results of the Dance-Off place Aly and Mark and Zendaya and Val higher than Kellie and Derek, who have immunity. This is fine for tonight because Kellie and Derek don't need votes, but it leaves one to wonder what effect the Dance-Off scores will have for any future ties in which a cumulative score is used to call the winner, and if winning immunity tonight will actually work against Kellie and Derek.
