This week in our link roundup we're kicking it old school with news about celebs who have spent decades in the public eye: Oprah, Liza, Joel Gray, Robert Osborne, Betty White, Dick Van Dyke, Shirley Temple, Barbara Walters and Jim Nabors. We are also listening to the late, great guitarist Jef Lee Johnson. These stars made it to the top the old fashioned way, with talent, brains, hard work and moxie.
Right before Ms. Minnelli did Liza with a Z, her phenomenal concert film, she and her pals Bob Fosse, John Kander and Fred Ebb worked together on another movie: Cabaret (1972). The film, which won a total of eight Academy Awards, recently turned 40 and was celebrated with a party attended by cast members including Liza, Joel Gray, Michael York and Marissa Berenson, plus celebs like TCM's main movie maven, Robert Osborne. On February 5, Cabaret will be released on Blu-Ray Book format with a 40-page book with photos and information on the making of the film.
Oprah Winfrey turned 59 on January 29, and she looks fabulous. If you don't think so, be sure to post about it on Twitter so we can all giggle when the grand dame of talk responds in front of her 16 million followers. For the record, a few years back we stood next to Oprah at the Philly premiere party for Beloved - she's lovely.
Betty White also had a birthday in January; she turned 91 on the 17th. Betty has been in show business for over 70 years! This week on Tuesday, February 5 from 8 to 9 PM, NBC will air Betty White’s 2nd Annual 90th Birthday Special - guests include former President Bill Clinton.
Speaking of Twitter, this week many us of were excited to hear child-star-turned-ambassador Shirley Temple opened an account. It turned out to be a fake, but while checking out the bogus Tweets we found a verified account for one of our favorites, Dick Van Dyke. Last week Van Dyke, who has also been in show business for 70+ years, received a Life Achievement Award at the 19th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Barbara Walters proved she can do anything the younger set can do - this week her view is from a hospital bed, as she contracted a rare case of adult chicken pox. Get well soon!
Actor (and macadamia nut mogul!) Jim Nabors married his partner of 38 years, Stan Cadwallader, in Seattle last month. We're wishing them peace, happiness, health and prosperity for many years to come.
He may not have been a household name, but music fans around the world are mourning the untimely passing of legendary guitarist Jef Lee Johnson at age 54 on January 28 in Philadelphia. You can witness his astounding talent in the video below. Godspeed, Mr. Johnson.
