For this week's news roundup we're focused on style: David Bowie is at the V&A; George Clooney and Stacey Keibler at The Oscars; Justin Bieber and Damon Lindelof; Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (RHOBH) stars Brandi Glanville, Yolanda Foster and Lisa Vanderpump (who is headed to Dancing with the Stars - DWTS); shoes by OCD Collection, and thrift store demons courtesy Pat Robertson.
Years ago, when my husband A.D. and I were still about 20 years away from meeting, we were living parallel lives as David Bowie fans, both of us working short orange haircuts and space-glam finery. At our wedding in 2000 our first dance as a married couple was to Bowie's version of "Wild is the Wind". Now in 2013, we're sharing the happy news that Bowie's first album in over a decade, The Next Day, is just days away from its March 12 release, and from March 28 through August 11, London's Victoria and Albert (V&A) Museum is launching a retrospective of his career called David Bowie is. The exhibition will feature over 300 items from Bowie's personal archive (costumes, handwritten lyrics and artwork) and detail his influence on sound, graphics, theater, art, film and fashion (turn to the left!).
My parents had a sense of humor about my fashion choices, but once when I was a teenager I strolled the Atlantic City boardwalk wearing clear vinyl jeans over a Danskin bodysuit with a Bowie lightning bolt necklace and full body glitter to complete the ensemble. The first time my Mother saw those pants (days later) was the last time I ever saw them. My Mom, with her infinite wisdom and impeccable style, didn't even give them away - she threw them out. Perhaps Justin Bieber's Mom will do him the favor of tossing the purple poo-butt pants Damon Lindelof was Twitter-snarking this week (I'll give him a pass on the spiked hat though - I wore a cap with big silver wings on it back in the day). Meanwhile, as an adult I'm still in trouble, since most of my clothes are vintage finds; this week Pat Robertson confirmed that thrift store purchases may be possessed by demons.
Last week George Clooney and his lady Stacey Keibler got my vote for best dressed at The 85th Annual Academy Awards - they both looked stunning (trivia: our very own A.D. Amorosi was one of the first journos to interview Ms. Keibler - it was a cover story for the now-defunct Men's Edge Magazine in 2005). Brandi Glanville wore a barely there gown at the Oscars - it was a tad low - so I didn't love the dress, but she's still fabulous. Brandi is one of my three faves on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, the others being Lisa Vanderpump, the pretty mogul in pink who will be appearing on this season of Dancing With the Stars, and the lovely, lemon-growing Danish model Yolanda Foster. Check out the link to Ms. Foster's US Weekly interview - regarding style she says, "...a good pair of shoes and a great belt makes you look like a million bucks."
