Zendaya, Val Chmerkovskiy and Gleb Savchenko of DWTS |
On Dancing with the Stars week 8, the six remaining celebrities performed one dance with their pro partner, then each couple selected a pro who was eliminated or in the DWTS troupe to participate in a trio. By night's end, Disney star Zendaya had earned the first perfect score of the season (three 10s) and was at the top of the leaderboard; Bachelor star Sean Lowe was at the bottom. Also, this week head judge Len Goodman lost his cool during his critique of Kellie Pickler's trio with Derek Hough and Tristan MacManus; click "read more" then scroll to the the bottom of this article to see a video of their dance and watch Len yelling at Derek about the choreography, and then telling fellow judge Bruno Tonioli, "You can't talk unless you stand up - your vocal cords are stuck up your (expletive)!"
UPDATE: Click "Read More" then scroll down to the bottom of the article to see who was eliminated on week 8 of Dancing with the Stars.
As always, the routines are judged by Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli, and the music is provided by the Harold Wheeler Orchestra. The show's hosts Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke-Charvet announce the rules for this week’s competition and Trio Challenge, then the dancing begins.
Disney Star Zendaya and Val Chmerkovskiy do a Foxtrot to the song “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” by Bobby McFerrin. Zendaya wears a floral tea length dress with a wide green belt; Val is in a white shirt with black pants and tie. They are an elegant pair; when they dance it looks like they’re floating. Len calls their routine a “pretty dance” and says he “loved the choreography”. Bruno describes it as, “pure, graceful, light and breezy,” and says Zendaya has “incredible natural musicality.” Carrie Ann thinks the “beginning was a little weak”, but when they went into hold they “took her breath away.”
SCORES: Carrie Ann 9, Len 10, Bruno 9 for a total 28 of out of 30
The Bachelor Star Sean Lowe and Peta Murgatroyd do a Tango to the song “Hot n Cold” by Katy Perry. Sean wears a black tuxedo; Peta is in a wedding gown with a short front and long back. To me it looks like Sean is thinking too hard and not enjoying the dance. Bruno tells Sean, “You started extremely well,” but then, “You lost your footwork.” Carrie Ann thinks that this week Sean has fallen “back to inconsistency.” and that he “lost the music again.” Len cites the routine for “plenty of punch and attack” but finishes his critique by saying it was “not a great dance” and that “it was a little bit ugly.”
SCORES: Carrie Ann 7, Len 7, Bruno 7 for a total of 21 out of 30
Superbowl Champion Jacoby Jones and Karina Smirnoff do a Viennese Waltz to the song "It's a Man's, Man's, Man's World" by James Brown. Jacoby wears white shirt with black pants and an untied bow tie; Karina is in a pale aqua gown. My notes on Jacoby’s performance consisted of only two words: “suave” and “smooth”. Carrie Ann says, “That was absolutely stunning… a nice surprise.” Len asks Jacoby’s Mom, “What did you think?”, and when she answers that she loved it, Len says “So did I!” Bruno says the Viennese Waltz looks easy but is hard because “it requires so much control.”
SCORES: Carrie Ann 9, Len 9, Bruno 9 for a total of 27 out of 30
Actor Ingo Rademacher and Kym Johnson do a Foxtrot to the song "You Make Me Feel So Young" by Frank Sinatra. Ingo wears a white shirt with charcoal pants, a vest, bow tie and hat; Kym is in a gown with a nude and silver beaded top and white chiffon inserts at the bottom. Ingo didn’t feel well in rehearsals (sore and tired), but he did a nice job. Len compliments Ingo’s “gliding feel” and “ease of movement”, and calls his number “Well done!” Bruno tells Ingo, “You did a great job… you even put an arabesque into it.” Carrie Ann says Ingo has a “casual quality” that reminds her of Gene Kelly.
SCORES: Carrie Ann 8, Len 8, Bruno 8 for a total of 24 out of 30
Country Singer Kellie Pickler and Derek Hough do a Viennese Waltz to the song "Fade Into You" by Mazzy Star. Kellie wears a white gown with a chiffon skirt and short chiffon handkerchief sleeves; Derek is in dark pants and a white shirt. It’s an excellent number with strong emotional content. Bruno calls Kellie “the prettiest of them all” and compliments her expressive, wonderful technique. Carrie Ann says “Dance without emotion is just a bunch of steps” and that tonight, Kellie “went beyond the steps” and that she has “something incredible.” Len remarks that the dance was “sophisticated” and “effortless”, and says, “Lovely dancing, well done!”
SCORES: Carrie Ann 9, Len 9, Bruno 10 for a total of 28 out of 30
Olympic Gymnast Alexandra Raisman and Mark Ballas do an Argentine Tango to the song "Reflejo de Luna" by El Alacran. Aly wears a short black costume with a long, asymmetrical skirt in back; Mark is in all black except for his white spats. I think that the dance isn’t as sultry as it could have been, but the judges disagree with me. Carrie Ann tells Aly, “The transformation I’ve seen in you is unbelievable.” Len says it has “mood” and “atmosphere”, and that it was “smooth, seductive, terrific.” Bruno tells Aly she has “sultry temptress down to a ‘T’”, and calls her number “sensational.”
SCORES: Carrie Ann 9, Len 10, Bruno 10 for a total 29 of out of 30
Then the Trio Challenge begins.
Zendaya and Val Chmerkovskiy do a Salsa with Gleb Savchenko to the song "Dança Molengo" by Bonde do Rolê. Zendaya wears a white shirt embellished with gold trim with white pants; Val and Gleb are in white pants and open shirts. Zendaya holds own with the pros in the cool, fast number, and she has great facial expressions. The crowd gives the trio a standing ovation. Len says, “The three of you work together great”, and he loves that Zendaya was the star of the number. Bruno calls the performance, “Sizzling, dazzling and amazing”. Carrie Ann tells Zendaya, “You are the queen of the salsa.”
SCORES: Carrie Ann 10, Len 10, Bruno 10 for a total 30 of out of 30. Zendaya earns the first perfect score of the season.
Sean Lowe and Peta Murgatroyd do a Jazz routine with Sharna Burgess to the song "Magic" by B.O.B. Sean wears a tux and sneakers; Peta and Sharna are in red costumes with a feathered backs and red thigh-highs with garter belts. I notice timing issues and clunky footwork (personally, I find it hard to dance in sneakers). Bruno quips that there was “Plenty of magic with a little bit of tragic.” Carrie Ann says Sean was “out of sync a few too many times,” but she loved his exuberance. Len says that “attack came in and style went out.”
SCORES: Carrie Ann 7, Len 7, Bruno 7 for a total of 21 out of 30
Jacoby Jones and Karina Smirnoff do a Paso Doble with Cheryl Burke to the song "La Virgen de la Macarena" by Canadian Brass. Jacoby wears a yellow matador costume with black sequin trim; Karina and Cheryl are in corresponding gowns. The dance has fun choreography and lots of paso poses for Jacoby, and earns a standing ovation from the audience. Carrie Ann says Jacoby is an “impressive presence” on the floor, but would have liked him to take more care when he was “tossing” Cheryl. Len tells Jacoby, “Up until now you’ve been a pretender; you’ve become a contender tonight.” Bruno calls it a “raw, powerful, unchained paso doble by Quentin Tarantino”, but adds that Jacoby needs to sort out the Spanish lines of the dance.
SCORES: Carrie Ann 8, Len 9, Bruno 8 for a total of 25 out of 30
Ingo Rademacher and Kym Johnson do a Jive with Lindsay Arnold to the song "Dance with Me Tonight" by Olly Murs. Ingo wears a pink vest over a white shirt with black and white checkered pants; Kym and Lindsay are in matching pink costumes. It’s not the hardest dance in the competition, but it makes me smile. Len thinks it could have been a little bit sharper in the feet, but that it was fun and he liked it. Bruno compares Ingo’s dance to a sugar high, and agrees with Len that it should be sharper and tighter. Carrie Ann says Ingo was “a little flat-footed at times”, but she was happy that Ingo brought back some of the fun that was lost when Andy Dick was cut last week.
SCORES: Carrie Ann 8, Len 8, Bruno 8 for a total of 24 out of 30
Kellie Pickler and Derek Hough do a Paso Doble with Tristan MacManus to the song "Unstoppable" by E.S. Posthumus. Kellie wears her white gown from the first number, then tears it away to reveal a black gown (in their dance Tristan welcomes them to the dark side). Derek and Tristan wear all black including double-breasted vests with lamé lapels. The routine features exciting choreography enhanced by strobe lights and dramatic, modern classical music. Bruno yells, “That was Masterpiece Theater, a journey into darkness form angel to demon! Absolutely amazing!” Carrie Ann hugs Kellie and says, “That was incredible, you took my breath away,” then Bruno gets up and dances with Derek. Then Len yells too, but not in a good way - he says, “I was expecting more than flashing lights and crashing music and a hodge-podge of moves just out there to titillate the taste buds.” Then Len yells at Bruno, who has stood up (as he often does) and is telling Len he's wrong. Len points at him and says, "You can't talk unless you stand up - your vocal cords are stuck up your (expletive)!" Of course the other judges are incredulous. Scroll down for a video of this trio.
SCORES: Carrie Ann 10, Len 7, Bruno 10 for a total 27 of out of 30. The audience “boos” Len’s low score, and Tom tells Len, “I don’t know you anymore.”
Alexandra Raisman and Mark Ballas do a Jive dance with Henry Byalikovto the song "Hit the Road Jack" by Ray Charles. Aly wears a black, red and white fringed costume with long knotted pearls; Mark and Henry are in black pants and shorts with red vests and white ties – all three wear red hats with black bands. They dance well together, but it’s hard to look at anyone but Mark because of his wonderful, snappy footwork. Carrie Ann tells Aly, “I’m loving what I’m seeing this week, it’s consistent,” but notices that Aly was a little flat-footed and lost the music at the top of the routine. Len rhymes that Aly didn’t “dilly-dally”, and praises the “terrific number.” Bruno tells Aly, “You’ve grown so much as a performer… you’re able now to play characters, I hope you’re coming back next week.”
SCORES: Carrie Ann 9, Len 9, Bruno 9 for a total of 27 out of 30
