| Judge's Choice Winners, Fat Jack's BBQ, Philadelphia Burger Brawl 2013 |
Normally our Italian Market neighborhood smells like garlic and scampi, but this past weekend on Sunday, May 5, the area was fragrant with the aroma of the third annual Philadelphia Burger Brawl competition taking place a few blocks over at the Fleischer Art Memorial. The event was started in 2011 by Rob and Maggie Wasserman of Rouge restaurant to raise funds for computer labs for Philadelphia's public elementary schools. The 2013 Brawl showcased over twenty-five restaurants grilling their best burgers for a sold-out crowd of 700-plus attendees.
The burgers were rated by a long list of celebrity judges including actor and food entrepreneur Tony Luke Jr., Danya Henninger (Zagat), Kacie McDonnell (Fox 29), Tony Bruno (97.5 The Fanatic), Marilyn Russell (95.7 Ben FM) and A.D. Amorosi (Philadelphia City Paper, and of course, Glamorosi Magazine). Marc Summers (The Food Network) hosted the event, and Mike Jerrick (Fox 29) cheered on the chefs and charmed the crowd.
Just before the event ended, the winners were announced: the Judges Choice Award went to Fat Jack’s BBQ for their Ultimate Memphis Mauler Burger made with Angus brisket and ribeye; the People’s Choice Award went to Lucky’s Last Chance for their Peanut Butter and Bacon Burger, and the Best Cocktail Award was presented to Butcher and Singer for their Apple Pie Old Fashioned. Mark Bee from Silk City scored a cool Jim Beam branded guitar in the event’s raffle.
The participating restaurants in Philadelphia Burger Brawl 2013 were: 10 Arts Bistro & Lounge, Alla Spina, Barbuzzo, Butcher and Singer, The Capital Grille, The Corner, The Dandelion, ELA, Fat Jack's BBQ, Davios, Good Dog Bar, The Industry, Kennett, London Grill, Lucky’s Last Chance, Misconduct Tavern, Chef George Sabatino, Percy Street Barbecue, Rex 1516, Table 31, Shake Shack, Silk City, South Philadelphia Tap Room, and Spencer ETA Burger. 500 Degrees, Saint James and Rouge (who had one of our favorite burgers of the day) also took part in the event but were not competing.
