On last night's Dancing with the Stars semi-final performance show (season 16, week 9), the five remaining couples competed in two rounds: first with their regular ballroom number, then with a dance style selected by the public via Twitter votes.  Four dances earned perfect scores, and in the end Superbowl champion Jacoby Jones and Olympic gymnast Alexandra Raisman tied at the top of the leaderboard with 59, and actor Ingo Rademacher was at the bottom with 51. Tonight (May 14) the viewer's votes will be added in, and one contestant will be eliminated; look for an update at the bottom of this post after the results show airs.

The routines are judged by Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli, and the music is provided by the Harold Wheeler Orchestra. Hosts Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke-Charvet kick off the show by talking about the dances for this week’s show including two new styles, Flamenco and Afro-Jazz, then the competition begins.

ROUND ONE

Country Singer Kellie Pickler and Derek Hough do an Argentine Tango to the song "Para Te" by A.P.P.A.R.T. Kellie wears a red, beaded, one shoulder, backless dress with an asymmetrical hemline and she sports a short brunette bob wig; Derek is in a black suit and tie with a white shirt. Their routine starts with them dancing in silhouette in front of a red screen; it’s a sexy routine with smooth moves, and the effect is absolutely striking. Referring to last week’s infamous criticism and low scores for Kellie and Derek’s trio with Tristan MacManus, head judge Len Goodman tells Kellie, “The past is of no consequence, the rest of the competition starts tonight and I'll tell you, that was a mix of pride and joy - pride in the technique, joy in the performance.” Derek shakes Len's hand, and Kellie kisses him on the cheek. Bruno says, “Welcome to the world of the sublime” and calls their work in silhouette “pure perfection”. He also says Kellie reminds him of Chita Rivera. Carrie Ann thinks it is “absurd” that Kellie can “obtain that level of perfection in silhouette.”
SCORES: Carrie Ann 10, Len 10, Bruno 10 for a total of 30 out of 30

Actor Ingo Rademacher and Kym Johnson do a Samba to the song "One More Night" by Maroon 5. Ingo wears a black muscle shirt and pants; Kym is in a nude and gold beaded costume with a thigh-length fringe skirt. It’s hard to follow Kellie and Derek, but Ingo does well and the crowd supports him with enthusiastic applause. Bruno tells Ingo, “I love your determination, I can really see you put the work in.” Carrie Ann says, “You’re the underdog, you have the biggest fight to make it into the finals,” and calls his performance ‘a bit inconsistent.” Len offers, “I thought you did a good job with a difficult dance… well done!”
SCORES: Carrie Ann 8, Len 8, Bruno 8 for a total of 24 out of 30

Olympic Gymnast Alexandra Raisman and Mark Ballas do a Rumba to the song "When I Was Your Man" by Bruno Mars. Aly wears a fuchsia and black chiffon costume and flat metallic shoes; Mark is in black shirt and pants. They do an emotional number with pretty holds. Carrie Ann screams, “Aly, way to go… you drew us all in, the beauty, the drama, the lines, the sensuality!” Len says the dance “had romance but it wasn’t raunchy… it had a lovely story and it was beautifully told.” Bruno compliments Aly with, “The transformation is complete… you had us all enchanted”
SCORES: Carrie Ann 10, Len 10, Bruno 10 for a total of 30 out of 30

Superbowl Champion Jacoby Jones and Karina Smirnoff do an Argentine Tango to the song "Concierto Para Quinteto" by Astor Piazolla. Jacoby wears black vest and pants with white shirt and a black hat; Karina is in a black, long sleeved, sequined costume and sheer black seamed stockings. They also have sexy choreography, and they get a standing ovation. Len enthuses about the routine’s mood and intensity, and says, “Ka-ching! Right on the money, Jacoby!” Bruno oozes, “You two animals… the sexual tension was unbearable! So slick and clean you were like a prowling predator… best performance ever from you!” Carrie Ann is already swooning from the dance, and then Jacoby kisses her cheek, which inspires her to do a go-go dance at the table; host Tom Bergeron counts that as her critique.
SCORES: Carrie Ann 10, Len 10, Bruno 10 for a total of 30 out of 30

Disney Star Zendaya and Val Chmerkovskiy do a Quickstep to the song "Don't Give Up" by the Noisettes. Their number starts out with them in race cars, and they are in driving gear: Zendaya wears a yellow jumpsuit with wide legs and a black stripe down the side; Val is in a black jumpsuit with a yellow stripe. Their routine is good, but not as clean as usual. Bruno says, “I really can see what you were trying to do and I loved the concept, but you lost the frame and you lost your footing a couple of times.” Carrie Ann tells them, “That was kind of a mess - body contact was off, it felt like you were dragging each other thru the dance.” Len cites the dance for, “good hold, good frame, lovely movement”, but adds, “so much attack - the speed came in and the style went out.”
SCORES: Carrie Ann 8, Len 8, Bruno 9 for a total of 25 out of 30

ROUND TWO

Country Singer Kellie Pickler and Derek Hough do a Flamenco dance to the song "The Pirate That Should Not Be" by Rodrigo y Gabriela. Kellie wears a white beaded gown with long, full sleeves and a tiered skirt; Derek is shirtless in light brown high-waisted pants with black suspenders and hat. This is the first time dancing Flamenco for both Derek and Kellie and they do very well, but she does seem a little less buoyant toward the end of the dance. Len tells Kellie, “You’re small but your talent is huge… as far as I’m concerned you just booked your place in the finals.” Bruno calls Kellie out for “a couple of moments where you tightened up.” Carrie Ann also tells Kellie, “half way through you tensed up,” then asks Kellie why. She answers that her “dress weighs a thousand pounds”, so Derek carries her up the stairs to do their post-dance segment with Brooke Burke-Charvet.
SCORES: Carrie Ann 9, Len 10, Bruno 9 for a total of 28 out of 30 and a grand total of 58 out of 60

Actor Ingo Rademacher and Kym Johnson do a Charleston to the song “Fat Sam's Grand Slam" from the film Bugsy Malone. Ingo wears a pink vest pants and tie with a white shirt; Kym is in a pale pink and white beaded white flapper-style dress with a fringed skirt. It’s a spirited, whimsical routine that Bruno calls, “frothy, bubbly… slightly mind-bending… fun, fun, fun.” Carrie Ann tells Ingo, “You had a grand slam with that one… you captured the essence of the roaring 20s.” Len says the performance was, “bubbly, full of fizz” and that it was “a good time to do your best dance!”
SCORES: Carrie Ann 9, Len 9, Bruno 9 for a total of 27 out of 30, and a grand total of 51 out of 60

Olympic Gymnast Alexandra Raisman and Mark Ballas do an Afro-Jazz dance to the song "Azumba" by Gregor Salto. Aly wears an African-inspired costume with black, white and turquoise feathers; Mark is shirtless in a corresponding costume with a white skirt, and they both wear headdresses. It’s a sharp, stirring performance, and the crowd and judges love it. Carrie Ann says they were in perfect sync and calls it an “athletic dance”, Len echoes that they were in perfect sync and he loved the musical interpretation, but also says they “isolated each other a little bit,” and he would have liked to see them dance together more. Bruno calls Aly a “warrior princess” and says she has “exceeded all expectation." He ends with, "If you don’t make it to the final I’m going to judge in Speedos!”
SCORES: Carrie Ann 10, Len 9, Bruno 10 for a total of 29 out of 30, and a grand total of 59 out of 60

Superbowl Champion Jacoby Jones and Karina Smirnoff do a Lindy Hop to the song "Ding Dong Daddy of the D-Car Line" by Cherry Poppin' Daddies. Jacoby wears black and white pinstriped pants, a purple shirt with his Ravens number “12” on the sleeve, and orange tie and sleeve garters; Karina is in a black and white pinstriped dress with a chiffon skirt. It’s a fast dance, and to me they appear to fumble slightly as Karina comes out of a flip, but it’s a strong number and Jacoby’s footwork is snappy. Len says it was a routine with “high energy” and “full on action.” He noticed Jacoby was on the wrong foot early on and it disrupted the dance, but concludes by saying the number was, “well done.” Bruno calls it, “a frantic frenzy of electricity,” and adds, “For me, you nailed it, man.” Carrie Ann deems Jacoby “the number one entertainer of season 16.”
SCORES: Carrie Ann 10, Len 9, Bruno 10 for a total of 29 out of 30, and a grand total 59 out of 60

Disney Star Zendaya and Val Chmerkovskiy do a Hip Hop routine to the song "Fine China" by Chris Brown. Zendaya wears a pink shirt with black pants, a studded denim vest and black sneakers; Val is in black suit with a white shirt and pink sneakers. This was Val’s first-ever attempt at dancing hip hop, and he and Zendaya do a great job. Bruno tells them, “That was ridiculous, so cool it gives me chills… Zendaya forever.” Carrie Ann tells Val he did a “nice job,” and tells both of them it was “great.” Len says, “I like the attitude you both came out with… great rhythm… I thought it was fantastic!”
SCORES: Carrie Ann 10, Len 10, Bruno 10 for a total of 30 out of 30, and a grand total of 55 out of 60
